Winter Driving Tips

Heavy snow is not something that usually happens in the UAE, but then again there are times that it has actually snowed in the country.  Like this January there was snow around Jebel Jais but especially on the peak. However, this doesn’t mean that you should learn at least some of the things to do if you ever get to drive in snow.

Ideally when it snows, especially heavily, you shouldn’t be driving, except you absolutely can’t help it.

The major problems driving in wintry weather is visibility and loss of traction. These are not the only problems, but they do appear to be the major ones.

Prepare your car for winter conditions .there are certain aspects of your car that should be taken good care of.

Cooling systems: So for your antifreeze look at maintaining somewhere between a 50/50 to a 70/30 antifreeze to water ratio. Your technician should know the right antifreeze for  you to avoid freezing and corrosion

Battery: It takes more power to start your car during the colder months, this is because as temperature drops battery power decreases. Go to your auto mechanic so that you have your batteries in perfect shape.

Fix the little thing such as wires, spark plugs and the likes. You don’t want to be stranded at any point during snowing weather.

Your Tyres

All-season tyres can work for cold weather, however when temperatures consistently reach around freezing it’s the time to switch to winter tyres. Buy tyres online since you know what you need and we’ll deliver them to you.  Winter tyres provide better traction in snow and ice, summer tyres will harden, therefore will lack the ability to grip the road. Don’t forget to also maintain your tyre pressure. In fact, do more pressure checks during winter than at other times. Tyre care also includes getting good quality tyres. Michelin tires Dubai, Abu Dhabi are great tyres to have, and they make all kinds of tyres, from summer to winter tyres and everything in between.

Make Sure Rear Window Defroster is Working

You want to have as much visibility as possible, check that your rear window defroster is working. You need the windows to be clear of debris and condensation.  Also, you want to make sure your wiper fluid is full. Heavy snowing can make you use a large quantity of the fluid, and you don’t want to find that you’re out of this fluid when out on a winter drive. Use the one that’s been formulated for cold weathers, they are always available in auto shops

Make Sure Your Gas Tank is at 50% at Least

When you have a full tank condensation is reduced. You don’t want you gas line freezing, this will help.

Keep Your distance

You want to drive slowly in winter conditions. Also, find an area that’s not busy along the road and test your brakes. You want to know how long it will take to come to a stop. Keep a space of 8-10 seconds between you and the car in front of you, you want enough room to manoeuvre if there’s a need.

Carry a Winter Breakdown Kit

They include a shovel, ice scraper and de-icer, warm clothing and blanket. First aid kit jump-start cables, Snacks and a warm drink in a thermos. Reflective warning sign, Mobile phone charger and snow grips for your shoes.
